Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Saturday said that MGNREGA has brought pace in the financial inclusion of villages and the bank accounts opened under this scheme will help the government in direct cash transfer scheme. While attending the MGNREGA Anniversary Function he said that under the scheme more than four crore bank accounts have been opened up and accounts have also been opened up in post offices in large numbers.
Mr. Singh said that this accounts will also help in implementation of direct benefit transfer. MGNREGA is one of the world’s largest schemes aimed at removing poverty. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi while addressing said that under the scheme complaints have been received regarding hiccup with the money which is needed to be stopped.
Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram justified the Aadhaar based direct benefit transfer scheme for the welfare programmes and showed surprise why people are opposing it while it is eliminating intermediaries from the process. The Aadhaar based DBT scheme was launched in 20 districts from January 1 and government has said that the implementation will cover 43 districts by the end of March 31.
