More than 45 lakh transactions were completed in the bank accounts of the consumers till 20th August 2013 under the Aadhaar based LPG subsidy through DBT scheme in 20 districts. A total of about Rs. 188 crore LPG subsidies was transferred into the Aadhaar linked bank accounts of LPG consumers in the 20 districts. The scheme which began from June 1 in 18 districts was followed by its launch in Mysore district of Karnataka from July 1 and Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh from August 1 2013. These 20 districts are part of 8 states and 2 union territories. Oil and Petroleum minister M Veerappa Moily has given green signal to the extension of this scheme in 35 more districts of states with higher Aadhaar coverage from September 1. This extension will take the number of districts to 55 under the scheme adding 1.4 crore more LPG consumers a part of the scheme. This extension occurs then the total number of LPG consumers receiving LPG subsidy directly into their bank account will go up to 2.12 crore.
Following is the list of states along with the number of districts where the scheme is expected to be extended:
- Kerala – 12 districts
- Andhra Pradesh – 7 districts
- Himachal Pradesh – 7 districts
- Punjab – 5 districts
- Madhya Pradesh – 2 districts
- Maharashtra – 1 district
- Goa – 1 district
Declaration about extension of the scheme in other districts of the country will be done after a detailed assessment. Government of India has started this scheme to bring an end to black marketing and misuse of subsidy on LPG cylinder. All those LPG consumers of the 18 districts where the scheme started from June 1 who missed out to submit their Aadhaar and bank details have been given a time period till 31st August 2013 to do so in order to continue receiving the LPG subsidy account. Similarly, the deadline date will be ending on 30th September 2013 for the consumers of Mysore district while 31st October 2013 for the LPG consumers of Mandi district. At the end of the deadline LPG cylinders would be sold at market price to all the consumers. However, subsidy would be transferred into the accounts of only those consumers who would have linked Aadhaar number with LPG consume number and bank account number.
