If you want to open a bank account then we have important news for you. Ration card is no longer a valid document to open a new bank account. Ration card has been replaced by Aadhar card as a valid document proof for opening a new bank account. On 17th July Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a circular to all the banks instructing them that Aadhar card is an official valid document to open a bank account. Besides Aadhar card other valid document for opening a new bank account are Voter card, PAN card, Driving License, Passport and NREGA job card.
Earlier it was in the practice that bank or financial institute could accept any other document to open a new bank account but now central government has notified that only those documents will be valid which are in the official list of valid document proof. Banks were accepting ration card or electricity or water bill to open a bank account but this will not be possible from now on. The circular states that amendments are needed to keep an eye on the black money. Ration card has been removed from the list of valid document proof. Only those documents will be accepted which have been issued by the central government.
