Aadhar Card Must for Filing Income Tax Returns (ITR)

Central government has moved a step further towards its process of curbing black money. After taking so many steps in this direction like demonetization of high-valued currency, soon government is going to make Aadhar card mandatory for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs). Not only government is planning to implement this major step, it is also possible that residents of India will not be able to apply for PAN card without having their Aadhar card.

Government has proposed amendments in financial bill to make this possible. If this proposal gets accepted then Aadhar card will be mandatory for both filing ITR and applying for new PAN card. ITR will be treated as invalid if Aadhar card number is not provided by the applicant. Aadhar card has been made a mandatory proof for availing various services from past few years.

Banks have already urged their customers to seed their Aadhaar numbers and mobile numbers with their bank accounts before the beginning of new financial year. Government has also issued circulars to bank asking them to seed Aadhar card numbers of their customers with their bank accounts. Customers are advised to provide their Aadhar card number to their respective bank branches so that the seeding process can be done well before the deadline.

Recently government also made Aadhar card mandatory for offering free LPG connection under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Not only this, government also had plans to make Aadhar card mandatory for mid-day meal scheme but could not actually implement it after severe protest from the opposition. Chief Ministers of West Bengal and Kerala openly criticized and opposed that plan by the government. Aadhar card will also be mandatory for opening EPF account from 1st April 2017.

Meanwhile, UIDAI, the Aadhaar issuing authority, has said that encryption standard will be implemented on Aadhaar authentication devices from 1st June 2017. Similarly, process for filing ITR is being made easier and more authentic. Income Tax department has already announced that it will soon launch an application for filing ITR and tracking refund status on mobile phones.
