Aadhaar not mandatory for government services: Rajiv Shukla

Government on Thursday said that Aadhar card is not mandatory for government services like opening bank account, admission in school, obtaining passport etc. Rajiv Shukla told this in Rajya Sabha. However, he said that linking Aadhaar number with bank account for consumers is necessary so that they can get LPG subsidy through DBT after implementation of this scheme in their region. He replied in written to a question on this. In another question’s reply he said that till 26th July a total of 39.36 crore Aadhaar have been issued while process to issue 42.65 crore Aadhaar numbers is still in process.

Government of India was issued a notice by Delhi High Court on 7th August asking them to file their responses by November 6. The notice came after a petition challenging implementation of Aadhaar on the ground that the scheme violates the privacy of the person. The plea raised serious concerns about critical personal and biometric information of the person calling it a highly invasive scheme. According to a NGO providing personal and biometric information is a violation of the right to privacy under Article 21 of the Indian constitution. The plea asked destruction of all the collected information and stop the implementation of the project.

Maharashtra has become country’s first state to provide payment through Aadhaar linked bank account. This information was provided by the state government in a press release. It has been informed that wages of July month of all the employees of IT Department were credited into their Aadhaar linked bank accounts. IT Secretary Rajesh Agrawal told that all the employees of the ministry will be included in the system.

Aadhaar week will be celebrated from 19th to 23rd August in Ajmer district for the purpose of encouraging people about importance and benefits of Aadhar card. Under this sprint, essay writing and question-answer competitions will be organized. Winning students will be awarded a total of Rs. 55,500 prizes. District Collector directed officials during a meeting of Aadhaar week on Thursday. He informed about the schedule of the program and the prize money to be distributed.
